The Harriet's Daughters Study Groups and Book Clubs are monthly virtual meetings led by the African National Women's Organization, where Black women, femmes, and those in solidarity come together to discuss books and other literature that center on African liberation themes. We invite you to join, regardless of whether you have read the book or not. It's always a great discussion.

March 2026: Killing The Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty by Dorothy Roberts

"The Meaning of Liberty," Roberts argues that the mainstream pro-choice framework is insufficient for Black women because it focuses narrowly on privacy and individual choice—the right to be left alone by the government. She contends that for Black women, reproductive freedom requires more than the absence of government interference; it requires affirmative government action to dismantle the social inequalities that make parenting impossible for many. She redefines reproductive liberty as the ability to bear and raise children with dignity in a just society.

A PDF of the book is included in the confirmation. HDBC virtual discussions are held on the Microsoft Teams platform.
