This webinar is about our community and our ability to parent as African women. We have an opportunity to overturn the contradictions imposed on us as parents by colonialism.

African mothers are being conditioned to believe that we cannot property care for our children. That is the Uhuru Kijiji Childcare Collective (UKCC’s) definition of insanity.  Colonialism tells us we are not capable of raising healthy children and the state has even created a mechanism to remove our children and place them outside of the home when we do not adhere to their social structure. Our parenting style is demonized, and we are under constant scrutiny and surveillance.

We are criticized for the way we speak to our children, the way we interact with them, and how we discipline them.

African mothers are notorious for lacking the necessary self-care we so desperately need to be mentally centered. Often as the result of being the primary caregiver and sole provider of our Children. With the necessary resources and support we can be great parents and have a positive relationship with our children as they grow and thrive.

It is our guiding principle to build communities through UKCC, so that mothers can have the support needed to once again know that we are properly parenting our babies and that colonialism is the real problem.
